Hair fall & Hair loss

This title may seem one and the same. But it’s not!

Hair fall – here the affected person literally sees his or her hair falling often too many. This fall may be noticed on combing, after bath, too many hairs seen on the room floor or on just running a hand through ones hair draws many loose hairs on hand etc. Seeing these loose hairs is disturbing to a person.

At this point let’s try to understand a bit about “Life cycle of the hair”. Each strand of our hair grows from a hair root which is situated just below our skin. This root under goes a cyclical activity. Initial part of the cycle is the production of a hair strand. Next this strand grows in length. After a while the growth stops then the strand enters a resting phase. Next step in the cycle is the detachment of the strand from its root and finally it’=s cast off. But this cycle doesn’t happen simultaneously in all the hairs. Different hairs have vert variable time frames for each phase of the cycle. What we have to understand here is when a hair strand falls the root is left back in the socket which later grows a new strand in the same socket. But if the root is damaged due to some reason the hair won’t grow back from that root. The inference here is if root remains healthy and performing its functions well the lost strand is replaced within expected time frame. Linear growth of hair is a slow process.

Each person is supposed to have an average about 1 lakh hairs on the scalp. And because of the hair cycling a loss of about 100 hairs daily is considered as a normal happening for the scalp hairs. This usually doesn’t lead to a significant hair loss. When the daily loss is more in number and happening over a time hair loss sets in. There are various factors at play here like the hair density and thickness of the hairs. Hair loss can sometimes happen without evident hair fall.

Some of the commonest causes of hair fall are,
  • Nutrition – Lack of balanced diet, not taking food at proper time like skipping daily breakfast
  • Balding in men & women
  • Health status of the person having acute and long term illness
