How does acne happen

How does acne happen?

Acne is a widespread problem faced by many usually teenagers. It also occurs in the middle ages too. Very rarely young children are also affected by acne. Pimples and its resultant marks are a distressing problem in certain teenagers so it can have a big negative impact psychologically and might result in a loss of self-confidence. Such individuals are very much withdrawn from others thereby resulting in impaired development of these individuals they fail to become productive and useful members of society.

Our skin has numerous oil-producing glands which are most common on the face. The oil these glands produce coats the skin surface and has a protective role on our skin. Acne results from blockage where these glands open to the surface of the skin. This blockade results in the collection of oily material in the gland, it becomes a small raised pimple on the skin. Later if this collection may get infected results in inflammatory changes in the pimple. This further can result in pus formation at times can result in scar formation in the area. Functions of these glands are strongly influenced by hormones. This is the reason why acne is more common in teenagers. If a person squeezes or does other manipulations on the pimple it will worsen the inflammation thereby ending with scars of varying severity. Most commonly there will be pigmentation but in severe cases there may be depressed or thickened scars.

Pimples can also be triggered by hormonal abnormalities, local activities like threading & waxing for hair removal, certain medications also cause acne as their side effect, stress, sun exposure and dietary factors like taking high calorific diet or by fast foods.

What can be done to improve pimples?

  1. Avoid occlusion of skin pores by oil dirt etc by frequent washing of the face by using a mild soap or face wash. Acne-prone persons should avoid the application of oily creams and lotions like moisturisers for affected areas.
